One of the most commonly prescribed analgesic today to treat moderate to unbearable pain is hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is not given as a single medication, but it is given in combination with acetaminophen. Hydrocodone is modified medicine codeine. It has a similar structure to codeine and morphine.

Hydrocodone is a semisynthetic drug. It is based on the poppy but not completely natural. Although hydrocodone is prescribed for pain, there are some addictive properties, which are abused. Hydrocodone for recreation purposes is a misuse of this drug.  So pharmacies must not sell this medication without a prescription.

What hydrocodone means

Hydrocodone, in one word, can be simplified as an analgesics. It is a kind of opioid medication which also have narcotic properties. Hydrocodone is a combination of medication. It is prescribed with the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or other inflammatory drugs.

The way how opioid drugs work is they work as an agonist to the opioid receptors. When the opioid receptors get occupied the signal transduction from the site of the pain to the brain gets blocked. They change the way how our brain reacts to pain.

Hydrocodone is a supportive medication. It does not treat the cause of pain. It only lowers the pain felt by the patients.  But when induced with the other pain-relieving medications, the other pain killers start to heal the patient, and the hydrocodone reduces the pain being felt.

The benefit is using hydrocodone

Hydrocodone is prescribed to patients who are suffering from mild to severe pain. To stop the pain, we have to stop producing a certain chemical known as arachidonic acid. The regular painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen do this work.

But it does not give complete relief from pain. That is where hydrocodone come in as a combination of medication. Hydrocodone does not interfere with the pain mechanism, but it alters the way how our brain reacts to pain.

So the benefit of this medication is getting extra relief addition to the analgesic tablets. So a patient does not have to get addition analgesic dose which may be toxic for the consumer, but instead, he can take hydrocodone.

Hydrocodone reduces the pain do not force the patient to take an extra dose of medication and makes the patient feel better.

Drug testing

Recreational use of hydrocodone:

Hydrocodone having an effect on the brain have been misused by the people for recreational purposes.  After taking this medication brain produces an effect known as “euphoria.” The common effects the consumer shows are “nodding off,” they feel more socially involved, fells content, and gets a warmth feeling. People also reported that they feel tired or lethargic.

Some people also take at intravenously, that make it feel like it works quickly.  They think that the brain reacts faster if taken intravenously, but it is bad advice, because it can have a very risky complication.

Though it is told by all the marketed companies that hydrocodone have many complications if not taken without a prescription, without paying attention to them at all, hydrocodone is used by the addicts for recreational purposes.

So hydrocodone is addictive when they are misused. The development of physiological addiction from a legitimate prescription, when it is advised is highly unlikely.

When this medication is fully addicted to a person, it is very hard to get rid of. There are some withdrawal symptoms which are common:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach cramping
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Bone pain
  • Pupil dilatation

Conclusion

There are many benefits of hydrocodone. As this drug helps the patients to get relieved from pain, it is commonly suggested by the doctors.

But we should be careful about using this medication. This medication has high addictive properties.  A little misuse or overdose will cause serious complication.

People who have respiratory disorders must be careful. When people use this medication, they feel difficulty in breathing and may suffer the life-threatening condition.
